Recognition of prior learning
Formal and non-formal knowledge already acquired can be claimed on enrolment or during studies. The process is handled by the Study Affairs Committee on the basis of an application and supporting evidence.
How to submit an application
After enrolling, a student can submit an application to the Office for Student Affairs for recognition of study obligations completed in Alma Mater programmes or at another faculty, by completing the form Application for Recognition of Study Obligations and submitting it to the office. The application must include:
- proof of passed examinations — please include the original transcript of records from the previous faculty;
- a confirmed course outline (syllabus) of the course you wish to have recognised.
Recognition of non-formally acquired knowledge and skills is open to candidates who wish to have such knowledge and skills considered as an admission requirement or as part of the obligations of a programme in which they are already enrolled. The candidate must submit all documents needed to assess the non-formal knowledge and experience.
The process for recognising non-formal knowledge and skills begins on the candidate’s request, submitted to the office on the Application for Recognition of Non-Formal Education form. A list of attached documents is a mandatory part of the application.
Candidates applying to study at Alma Mater who wish to receive a decision from the Study Affairs Committee on examinations recognised from other faculties before enrolment must also include proof of payment of EUR 300 for the issuing of the decision, as set out in the price list for the current academic year. If the candidate decides to enrol, this cost is deducted from the first tuition instalment.

Decision and tuition reduction
Candidates submit an application for recognition of ALL courses they wish to have recognised during their studies (not just those for the year of enrolment). Applications are considered only once, unless new formal qualifications are acquired during studies.
On the basis of a decision recognising formal or non-formal knowledge, students may apply for a reduction of tuition for the current academic year. Those who have at least 20 ECTS recognised in a given year may claim a reduction. The Alma Mater Executive Board has decided that tuition is reduced by 30% if 20–30 ECTS are recognised in a given year, or by 50% if 31–40 ECTS are recognised. Only fully recognised study obligations count. A copy of the decision must be attached to the tuition-reduction request. The request must be submitted no later than 8 days after receiving the decision, otherwise it will not be granted.
The Study Affairs Committee will recognise knowledge, skills or abilities that, in content and complexity, fully or partly match the general and/or course-specific competences defined by the study programme, where the knowledge is acquired through formal learning and evidenced by suitable certification, based on the statutory criteria (defined in the Higher Education Act, Official Gazette of RS, No. 67/1993 as amended, and the Criteria for Transitions between Study Programmes, Official Gazette of RS, No. 95/2010 as amended).
The fundamental criterion for recognising or not recognising prior knowledge is comparability of the knowledge acquired elsewhere with the course units, skills and competences of the study programme in which the candidate is to enrol.
Recognition of foreign education
Anyone holding a foreign education document who wishes to continue their education in the Republic of Slovenia must obtain a decision recognising the foreign education in order to continue. The process begins with an eVŠ application and is handled by an authorised person at the faculty/academy where the candidate has applied to study.
The decision is issued within two months of receiving a complete application.
