Short project description:

The project The Art of Cutting and Joining – Contemporary Dance Through the Eye of the Camera aimed to connect contemporary dance with the television medium, represented by TV AS – Televizija As Murska Sobota. The cooperation was designed as an educational and research laboratory, concluding with a final presentation in the form of a selected television genre.

In the European contemporary dance scene, the genre of dance film has been growing in recent decades, and demand for it has increased accordingly. However, this field remains difficult for Slovenian dance artists to access, as professional equipment is very expensive, the Slovenian film industry is financially under-supported, and working conditions are highly limited. The project offered students of Alma Mater Europaea – Dance Academy the opportunity to gain education, insight, and practical experience in a field that is usually accessible only to a small number of professionals. Students entering the professional performing arts sector need to understand the process-related, systemic, technological, and content-related aspects of film and television production, which are applicable both in education and in the broader social environment.

Film, like dance, is an art of movement. In addition to its technological characteristics, the camera has its own psychological, spatial, lighting, sound, and compositional principles. In representing an image, it faces challenges similar to those of dance. In terms of accessibility, however, film and television media reach a much wider audience than contemporary dance theatre and can more easily influence different cultural environments and cultural patterns. They therefore play an important role in shaping public opinion, the flow of information, desires, beliefs, and attitudes. This awareness formed the basis of the project.
